From Plants to Plastic – The BioMax™ Process

Sugarcane is one of the world’s most renewable resources. Grown in Brazil’s climate, it regenerates quickly after harvest and captures CO₂ during its growth cycle.

BioMax™ begins with Braskem’s I’m Green™ bio-based HDPE. The process starts with sugarcane grown in Brazil. After harvest, the sugarcane is processed into ethanol, which Braskem converts into ethylene and then into HDPE resin. We mold that resin into BioMax™ caps and plugs at our facility. The results are components made using a plant-based material while retaining the familiar strength and durability of HDPE.

BioMax™ - Sustainable Caps and Plugs

Made from Sugarcane

Braskem’s I’m green™ plastic is made from sugarcane, a renewable resource that regrows after harvest. Using sugarcane in place of fossil-based raw materials helps reduce reliance on petroleum.

Household Recyclable

BioMax™ caps and plugs are made from Braskem’s plant-based HDPE. They can enter the same #2 recycling stream as conventional HDPE, so customers can place them in household recycling where their local program accepts small HDPE items.

Grown With Rainfall

Braskem prioritizes new sugarcane growing areas that don’t require artificial irrigation. This helps limit the need to draw water from rivers, reservoirs, or groundwater for the crop.

Sugarcane That Absorbs CO₂

As sugarcane grows, it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. That plant-based carbon becomes part of Braskem’s I’m green™ HDPE, the material used to make BioMax™ caps and plugs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Popular Question

How does BioMax™ use Braskem’s I’m green™ material?

Braskem makes the I’m green™ bio-based HDPE resin used in BioMax™ caps and plugs. We use that resin to mold the finished caps and plugs.

Popular Question

How does sugarcane become HDPE?

After harvest, sugarcane is processed into ethanol. Braskem converts the ethanol into ethylene, then turns the ethylene into HDPE resin that can be molded into caps and plugs.

Is BioMax™ still plastic?

Yes. BioMax™ is made from HDPE plastic. What makes it plant-based is the source of the material: Braskem uses sugarcane-derived ethanol instead of a fossil-based feedstock.

Does plant-based mean biodegradable?

No. BioMax™ caps and plugs are designed to be durable. They will not break down like compostable components.

Does plant-based HDPE perform differently from conventional HDPE?

Braskem’s bio-based polyethylene has the same basic characteristics as conventional polyethylene. BioMax™ gives you the familiar strength and function of an HDPE jar with a renewable source for the resin.

Can BioMax™ caps and plugs be recycled?

BioMax™ caps and plugs are HDPE #2 plastic and can enter recycling programs that accept HDPE items. Check local guidelines, as acceptance can vary by area and may depend on the container’s contents and labeling.

Where is the sugarcane grown?

The sugarcane used to produce Braskem’s I’m green™ bio-based polyethylene is grown in Brazil. Braskem sources the resulting ethanol from suppliers through its responsible sourcing program.
